GWA x ROV "The Baron" Highland Camo

GWA x ROV "The Baron" Highland Camo

The Baron returns in all new Highland Camo designed by ROV.

In the early days of ROV I knew I needed a pattern. Not just to set me apart but to add some variety to my offerings. But with my style leaning simple, classic, and understated I had to think hard. All the classic camos are out there. M81 is everywhere, MultiCam isn’t me, and other niche patterns just didn’t fit. So what does that leave? Classic duck camo. But I still needed a way to set myself apart.

So I used it as a starting point. I found a designer to help adjust the pattern, and then I worked on colors. And worked on colors, and worked on them, and worked on them….

Until I’d almost forgotten where I started. I researched printers, fabrics, waterproof coatings. Finally, it came down to one clear choice: Halley Stevenson in Scotland. They’ve been at this for over 150 years and had everything I need in one place. I got with them and we spent a year going back and forth. Adjusting prints, working on the base fabric (heavy twill of course) and getting the colors just right.

And so, the highland pattern is born.

As usual heavy rugged twill is key, 18oz as usual. The fabric moves well but holds its shape. It ages gracefully and patinas beautifully. It will mold to the user in some ways and brush off damage but also show some of those scars that come from loving your bag.

I found a really nice tan color to print on that also happened to match a tan liner I really liked and set out printing samples. After about half a dozen tries, we got it right. Ending with a great palette that’s equal parts subtle and bold. The Highland pattern has a ton of character that can almost shift depending on your lighting. Blending away at night, and standing out just enough on a bright day.

Going a step further, we looked at waterproofing. I wanted to stay low impact. That meant that waxing was out. It can be done by the user later. That left two options with only one clear winner as far as I was concerned.

FCF - Fluorocarbon Free

This means it’s not based on long chain carbons like you’ll find in other water resistant products, making it safer to handle and better for the environment. It’s dry to the touch, doesn’t have any sort of waxy feel and will keep your bag looking sharp.

As mentioned, the fabric we printed on matched a tan color I really loved for the liner of this bag. It grounds the pattern into earth tones but still gives a really nice contrast for the interior, making it easy to find your stuff in the bag.

And lastly, what Baron would be complete without a ballistic base. I love the modern touch, the link to the bag accents, and knowing my bag is safe on the ground. It also helps add just a little more structure to the bag to help ensure it’ll stand on its own.

It goes without saying but I still love the Citadel micro form factor. It’s perfect for EDC or a weekend trip. The org is perfect, it’s flexible, and it allows for quick access to all my regularly used stuff. The water bottle pocket and pals loops provide added utility. As always it pairs perfectly with your choice of Hilt.  It’s the ultimate balance of form and function.
